Elaine grew up in Northwoods, and was a childhood friend and cousin to both Simon and Hugh of Harrowfield. Her father, Richard of Northwoods, gave her anything she wanted. However, when Richard arranged for her to marry Hugh, Elaine objected, for she was in love with Simon, and only cared for Hugh as a friend.[]
When Hugh revealed his plans to wed Sorcha, Elaine was inconvenienced but not annoyed. After Sorcha returned without Hugh to Harrowfield, it was Elaine who told Lady Anne and the people of what Hugh had done, and managed to keep peace and order during it. []
